WORDS CRAIG TANSLEY
The Rocky Mountains of Alberta offer some of the most picturesque vistas you’ll see anywhere on the planet. But they offer a lot more than that too. Adventure-seekers, you’re in heaven here, for Alberta is the place to be when it comes to outdoor pursuits.
ALBERTA

Let's ride ... Jasper as experienced from a Harley.
ALBERTA

Maligne Lake.

Jasper National Park.
SEE JASPER FROM THE SIDECAR OF A HARLEY
Get your motor running, and get out on the highway - because there’s no better way to see the Rockies than from the sidecar of a Harley Davidson motorcycle. Choose between one and three hour rides through the best natural attractions of Jasper National Park. You’ll ride to iconic Maligne Lake to see this world-famous azure-coloured lake framed by glaciers and 3000-metre-plus mountains and frequented by elk, caribou and (possibly) bears. Stop off for a soak in hot springs, and a drink with the best view of all.

The extraordinary blue waters of Moraine Lake, the most photographed lake in the world.
WORLD'S MOST PICTURESQUE LAKES
Alberta’s Rocky Mountains are home to some of the world’s most photographed lakes. These are glacier-fed waters that are otherworldly blue, and so reflective, they make you wonder which way is up or down. to them by floating a kayak or a canoe across them. There are tough kayak tours to do around Banff and Jasper, or you could just float along in paradise. Take a canoe out from the boathouse at Lake Louise’s Fairmont Chateau and marvel at the snow-capped peaks, or discover why Moraine Lake is the most photographed lake on Earth as you slowly paddle across it. You can even float down a river in Calgary - the gateway city to the Rockies - Alberta’s capital.

A white-water raft is arguably the most exciting way to see Alberta's rivers.
GET OUT ON ALBERTA’S WHITE WATER
If you can handle the rush and the whitewash, the most exciting way to see the mountains and rivers of Alberta is on a white-water raft. You don’t even have to paddle down these rivers: all that glacier-fed water from the mountains will push you downstream at a rate of knots. Just hold on. From the wild rivers near Banff National Park just outside Banff to the famous rivers of Jasper National Park, Alberta offers something for first-time paddlers right through to experts. You’ll see elk grazing on the banks and beavers splashing about, while eagles and ospreys fly overhead. There’s a choice of thrilling rivers like Jasper’s mighty Fraser and Sunwapta Rivers offering tight canyons with maximum backwash, but there’s also more introductory float tours too, where the spectacular scenery outweighs the thrills.

Yee-haw! Unleash your inner-cowboy/girl in Banff.
CHECK OUT BANFF ON HORSEBACK
Here’s a chance to get out into your own private piece of the Wild West – that’s actually only 16 kilometres from Banff. There are no roads into or out of Sundance Lodge, just horse trails. On your noble steed you’ll get to ride the same trails the original explorers of the Rockies carved out, alongside glacier-fed waters, and beneath the Sundance Ranges. Ride all day then settle in at Sundance Cabin, a log cabin built in the middle of the woods that’s powered by solar and kept cosy by wood fire. You can have a drink outside and look for local wildlife, before settling in by the fire for dinner cooked in the country kitchen.

Some of the best hiking in Canada - some of the best hiking anywhere - is at Banff National Park.

Waterfalls are a common sight in Banff National Park ...

... as are scenic ledges like this one.
HIKE THE WORLD’S MOST SCENIC PARKS
There’s no better hiking scenery anywhere on Earth. Whether it’s waterfalls, glacial lakes, alpine forests, wildlife or mountains – Banff National Park has you covered. There’s over 1600 kilometres of trails and they’re all easily accessible either from Banff, or from the resort town of Lake Louise. You don’t have to be a crazed adventurer either, in fact, some of the most scenic hikes are really just walks (like the world-famous Bow Falls seen in Marilyn Monroe’s River Of No Return, which is located in Banff itself). There’s also epic backcountry and overnight hikes too. For the more intrepid, there’s adventures to ghost towns (Bankhead was once a mining town of 1000 people), or a more gentle hike via historic tea houses near Lake Louise.

Walking over ancient ice at Columbia Icefield.
EXPLORE ANCIENT ICE
The Columbia Icefield well and truly pre-dates humans, having formed in the Great Glaciation period, roughly 238,000 to 126,000 years ago. This qualifies it as 'ancient', and makes it all the more special exploring the vast quantities of ice that still exist today. Riding the epic Ice Explorer, a beast of a vehicle that goes where other vehicles cannot, you'll feel as if on another planet, albeit a beautiful frozen one. The nearby Icefield Skywalk is another way to see the beauty of this area. Perched 275 metres in the air, you'll have a front row seat to nature's glory in the form of ice-capped mountain peaks and vast, glacier-formed valleys.
